Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's (PML-N) central working committee on Monday named Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif as an interim president of the party.

He is likely to be made the party president once again after the Supreme Court ruled that a person disqualified under Article 62 and 63 can not serve as the head of a political party. Shahbaz Sharif is now the chief minister of the country's biggest province, Punjab.

The party's meeting also approved the appointment of Nawaz Sharif as its leader for life.

Acording to Geo News, Shehbaz Sharif, who is said to be a consensus choice for the top party position, will become permanent president after intra-party elections are held within 45 days. The court order overturned a legal amendment by party lawmakers allowing Sharif to stay party president despite being disqualified from public office by the Supreme Court for failing to declare monthly income of 10,000 Emirati dirham ($2,723) from a company owned by his son.

After becoming the party president, Shahbaz praised his elder brother for making the PML-N the country's most popular political force. In 2006, he was again elected as the party president.

"Begum Kulsoom would have been the best choice to succeed Nawaz Sharif but since she is not well and is recovering from throat cancer (lymphoma) in London, Shahbaz Sharif has become the ultimate choice although some close to Nawaz have reservations (about him)".

Keeping this technical issue in mind, the PML-N's information secretary said that only those CWC members who were elected before the July 28 decision had been called for Tuesday's meeting.

"How long will this keep happening and how long can the country function like this?" asked Nawaz, who was ousted from the post of prime minister by the Supreme Court previous year for dishonesty in declaring his assets. For rendering such a role, a party head must necessarily possess the qualifications and be free of the disqualifications contemplated in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

The apex courts verdict was in response to 17 petitions challenging the controversial Elections Act 2017, which had been bulldozed through parliament a year ago to pave the way for Nawaz Sharifs return to the PML-Ns helm as party president.
