  • Iraq Sentences Turkish ISIS Brides To Death By Hanging

The women have admitted that they have married members of the jihadist group or have provided logistical support to them or were involved in terrorist attacks. Verdicts may be subject to appeals.

The women, said to be aged between 20 and 50, appeared dressed in black at the central criminal court in Baghdad on Sunday.

Iraq has handed over to Russian Federation four women and 27 children suspected of having ties to the group, the foreign ministry said on Thursday, adding that they were "tricked" into joining the militants.

According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), several women of different nationalities along with the ISIS fighters have surrendered to the Iraqi forces.

Thousands of foreign women joined ISIS after the group tore through northern Iraq in 2014 and seized almost a third of the country's territory. Many women came or were brought from overseas in the territories under the control of the jihadist group.

Last week, a Turkish woman was sentenced to death for membership in the terrorist organization.

16 Turkish women are sentenced to death by hanging for joining Islamic State (ISIS).

Iraq's central criminal court issued the sentences "after it was proven they belong to the Daesh terrorist group and after they confessed to marrying Daesh elements or providing members of the group with logistical aid or helping them carry out terrorist attacks", Judge Abdul-Sattar al-Birqdar said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Human Rights Watch has raised concerns about the judicial process and branded the trials unfair.

Earlier this week, a Baghdad court sentenced a French woman, Melina Boughedir, to seven months in jail for entering Iraq illegally but ordered her release on time already served. Iraq's government declared victory over ISIS December 2017 after Iraqi forces expelled militants from their last remaining pockets in western Iraq.

Separately, authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan said in early February they had detained some 4,000 suspected ISIS members, including foreigners.
