"I'm right in the ball game", Woods said on Friday after coming within two points of the lead on the second day of the Honda Classic.
Tommy Fleetwood hits back from a bogey at the third with a spectacular hole-out from the fairway at the fourth on day three of the Honda Classic.
Former British Open victor Louis Oosthuizen and reigning PGA Championship holder Justin Thomas were a stroke off the lead on 67, while defending champion Rickie Fowler (71) and four-time Major victor Rory McIlroy (72) were plagued by three bogeys and a double-bogey respectively. "Only one bogey", List told reporters. Crust greens and windy conditions made for a brutal test as the course played 73.156. Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger and South African Louis Oosthuizen all shot 72s to join Belgium's Thomas Pieters (70) in a quartet tied for seventh on 139.
Woods continued to give himself birdie chances but couldn't capitalize at Nos.
To Woods' credit, he came back with the type of response he needed to avoid a precipitous fall on the leaderboard after his promising start. He was short-sided in a bunker and left his chip shot just short of the putting surface, blading a sand wedge up and missing his bogey putt when he said a gust of wind affected his balance.
"Definitely excited to get a good round under my belt", said Simpson, who made all 14 of his putts from inside 10 feed on Thursday.
Only 10 players were under par for the tournament through 36 holes.
Thomas' scorecard included 17 pars. He adeptly avoided bogeys during his round but his scorecard suggests a bit of smoke and mirrors. At least I found it hard.
Woods rebounded with a birdie on the following hole and closed out his round with five consecutive pars.
Woods brought big energy to a Friday afternoon that already was hopping before he overcame a sluggish start and holed a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 9 to make the turn at 1 under for his round, and leaving him two shots out of the lead.
Woods picked up a lone birdie to climb back to an even-par total, just four shots off the pace. The Golf Channel analyst accused Woods of so many wrongs, including committing "self-mutilation" with his technique.
The world No.58 shot a three-under-par 67 to improve to two over in a tie for 20th. "Overall, it was a good grind out there".
"The wind was playing hard, the rough's up and it's really tough to make putts out there". I'm hitting the ball flush and on top of that, I'm really controlling the trajectory. "I did that for most of the day".
He was four shots out of the lead going into the weekend.
Defending champion Rickie Fowler had six bogeys in a seven-hole stretch and shot 77.
But Woods did comeback on the next hole, the tough 17th, a par-3 of 182 yards that also is guarded by water.
"It's very relentless", List said. "I didn't think he would chip this well, play bunker shots this well".
NOTES:Patton Kizzire did not fare well playing in Woods' group Friday. He was virtually certain to miss the cut.
