President Donald Trump tossed aside his prepared remarks he was set to deliver to the Conservative Political Action Conference and instead embarked on a more than an hourlong rant in which he called for arming teachers, cutting legal immigration and reliving the 2016 presidential campaign.

"If you only had a choice of one, what would you rather have?"

"Remember that they will take away those massive tax cuts and they will take away your Second Amendment", Trump told the congregation of conservatives.

Trump then shouted each option and allowed the audience to cheer, gauging the crowd's opinion on the matter.

Trump has invited doubters to feel his hair on more than one occasion. Climate change denial is popular: you can get a badge that says "I (heart) CO2". "Because I had five people outside say, 'Could you do The Snake?'". The cheers were louder for the gun rights, but Trump assured, "We're going to get them all". We're hanging in. We're hanging in there, right?

He told CPAC in Maryland that a "teacher would have shot the hell out of him before it happened" if they had weapons in the school, during the 1 hour and 20 minute long speech.

Trump attacked his vanquished 2016 rival Hillary Clinton, leading the crowd to begin a "lock her up" chant.

"Oh, I try like hell to hide that bald spot, folks", he said.

Trump bragged about the recent record stock market climb, boasted that he has fulfilled more campaign promises than any other President and encouraged Republicans to hit the polls for the midterm elections. "You know what happens, I'm trying to figure it out, because historically if you win the presidency, you don't do well two years later".

"Immigration", Trump said, before jumping into the story.

The mighty Cheeto was the belle of the ball at the highest profile right-wing gathering of the year, where he pledged to protect gun ownership rights, gleefully sparked a "lock her up" chant against Hillary Clinton, and proudly led the booing of fellow Republican John McCain (who is now recovering from brain cancer). But at separate event with the nation's governors, who are attending a weekend conference, Vice President Mike Pence noted that Trump had called for raising the age to 21, part of what Pence called "working with leaders in the Congress to bring this evil in our time to an end".

The conservative annual gathering was once skeptical of Trump, a former Democrat.

"Don't be complacent", Trump warned his fellow conservatives.

He repeated his insistence that some school professionals carry firearms, despite what he said was reasonable opposition to the idea. "I don't want to get into that battle".

The hallways were filled with well-dressed attendees adorned with Trump campaign hats and buttons.
