Apple reportedly releasing new AirPods 'as soon as this year'

  • The new version of Air Pods coming as early as this year will let people summon Apple’s Siri digital assistant without physically tapping the headphones by saying ‘Hey Siri

Apple also already reportedly has a subsequent model in the design stages for 2019, which would add water resistance.

Like with its mobile devices, the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, Apple is said to be planning to frequently update the AirPods with new hardware features. The two devices are identified as "A1954" and "A1893", described as "tablet computer brand model". Considering AirPods cost a rather hefty US$159 from Apple's online store at the moment, it's prudent for users to take great care of their product. Owing to the growing popularity of those tiny earphones, which inspired many companies to launch similar accessories, Apple is looking to bring some nifty upgrades to this year's AirPods.

Instead of tapping the headphones to activate Siri, users could simply say "Hey Siri" as they would when calling the assistant on an iPhone hands free.

Hopefully Apple also has plans to add the one feature I really want: tap to answer phone calls. This version of the AirPods is internally known as B288, and will include the new Apple-designed wireless chip for managing Bluetooth connections as well. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch is being sold as "swim-proof".

A new report on Thursday morning from Bloomberg states that Apple is now working on at least two different updated versions of its popular AirPods. What does not appear to be planned are a pair of AirPods that block outside noise or fit in my tiny, tiny ear canals.

The department that produced the HomePod speaker is said to be the designer of the AirPods, Bloomberg News reported previous year. First, they'll pack an upgraded wireless chip.

Demand for the current generation AirPods remains high, but a second generation is on the way.
