Pyeongchang - Norway's Marit Bjoergen became the most successful athlete in Winter Olympic history on Wednesday as she took bronze behind a stunning win for United States of America in cross-country skiing's women's team sprint free.

Skiers Jessica Diggins and Kikkan Randall won the U.S. its first-ever gold medal in cross-country skiing, with Diggins racing up from behind to snatch it from both Sweden and Norway, both of which have had the powerhouse women's ski teams in South Korea.

Marit Bjørgen equalled her compatriot Ole Einar Bjørndalen as the most decorated athlete in Winter Olympics history on Saturday.

"It's hard to understand, actually", Bjoergen said. A team of Russians took silver while the French won bronze.

While Bjoergen has been a regular on the Olympic podium over the years, Randall wasn't. "[That] was special because I had some problems for three years, and then come back again and was at a high level and fighting for all the medals in Vancouver, that was special for me".

"In the individual races you are skiing for yourself". Closed the door But when the Norwegian closed the door as the young pretender tried to overtake her late on, Bjoergen's place in the history books was guaranteed. "Like I said before, when I've finished skiing I'll look behind me and see what I will have done".

It was the first time the USA have won a cross-country skiing medal in a women's event.

"If someone had told me in 2002 that I would be still standing here, still skiing here, I'd have thought that it's not possible, but I am here and I'm still fighting for medals", she said.

Although she won fewer medals in Sochi 2014, she still won three golds - in 30-km freestyle, skiathlon and team sprint. "It was one of the most important races for us at the Olympics".

Despite likely being disappointed at not adding yet another gold medal to her haul on Wednesday, she can reflect on a career that has spanned nearly 20 years. They're going to be following in our footsteps and showing up here in the next Olympic Games.
