Zainab rape and murder case: Accused Imran Ali gets four death sentences

The Prosecutor General of Punjab, Eihtesham Qadir Shah, announced the court's verdict at a televised news conference.

Security had been increased in and around the central jail and the movement of everyone going in and out of the jail is being monitored.

Currently, Section 364-A of the PPC reads "Whoever kidnaps or abducts any person under the [age of 14] in order that such person may be murdered or subjected to grievous hurt... or to the lust of any person [sic] shall be punished with death". He also thanked Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar for taking the personal interest in the case.

Her body was found on a trash heap on January 9 in the city of Kasur near Lahore, four days after she was reported missing. Her case was the twelfth such incident to occur within a 10 kilometre radius in Kasur city over a 12-month period.

Hundreds of local residents protested after Zainab's body was discovered, and two were killed when police fired shots to break up the crowd.

After the police arrested Imran, the suspect confessed to assaulting eight minor girls at an under-construction site.

Earlier, police sources confirmed Imran, a neighbour of the girl, had confessed to his crime before an investigation team. A total of 56 witnesses were named in the case.

On Monday, the anti-terrorism court on Monday indicted the prime accused in the Zainab rape case.

The brutal rape and murder of the child had sparked outrage and protests across the country.

Later, the court provided the suspect with state counsel to complete the trial proceedings.

In is the first in the judicial history of the country that a court has completed trial in seven days.

A three-member prosecution team led by Abdul Rauf Wattoo assisted the court.

Law enforcement agencies came under mounting pressure to find the killer of Zainab and other children in the region. On January 8, her body was found in a garbage dump in the city of Kasur.

Many Pakistanis, including Zainab's parents, have demanded Ali be publicly executed.
