  • Pakistan's army chief joins conference in Afghan capital

According to military's media wing, the army chief will participate in the Chiefs of Defense Conference in the Afghan capital.

The army chief restated Pakistan's position while speaking at the Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) conference held at Kabul . "Regions develop as a whole, not individual countries", Gen Qamar said in what appears to be a statement linked to the USA new strategy that sought greater role for India in the region.

It was also important to note that India, which has nothing to do with the Afghan issue, was rightly left out as has consistently been demanded by Pakistan.

The delegation held talks with Pakistani leadership on security cooperation amid the highly volatile security situation in their country. Alluding to such rhetoric being spewed from Kabul and Washington, he cautioned that collaborative approach and persistence is the answer to all challenges, for which Pakistan is ready to play its part.

The army chiefs will also look at the region's burgeoning narcotics trade as Afghanistan hits record levels of poppy production. U.S. officials estimate income from the illegal narcotics made from poppies funds 65 percent of Taliban-led insurgent activities.

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained frosty due to the latter's constant blame game on Pakistan's non-cooperation in tackling terrorism and insurgency and also sending terrorists to Afghanistan to conduct suicide.

In his address, Gen Qamar reiterated that the path to regional peace and stability passes through Afghanistan. He last visited the war-torn country in October past year and held wide-ranging talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and other leadership.

The army chief once again assured that the Pakistani territory would not be used against any other country.

Some reports earlier said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commanderGen.
