  • KP Sharma Oli sworn in as Prime Minister of Nepal

The CPN-UML on Thursday picked party Chairman K.P. Sharma Oli as the next Prime Minister of Nepal, a senior leader of the party said, over two months after the successful conclusion of historic parliamentary polls.

Nepal elected its first Communist Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and this marks the first tenure of a Prime Minister in the new national constitution.

Oli was also Prime Minister from 2015 to 2016, soon after the nation's current constitution was formalised.

This is the second time Oli has become PM in his four-decade-long political career, which began in the 1960s as a revolutionary inspired by India's bloody Naxalite movement.

The meeting made a decision to officially claim formation of the next government with the support from CPN Maoist Centre led by Prachanda.

Sher Bahadur Deuba, who resigned as prime minister earlier yesterday, spent just eight months in office.

No single party had received a majority in the election results, but the Left coalition of former Maoist rebels and the CPN (UML) together had 174 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives.

According to the President Bidhya Devi Bhandari's Chief Personal Secretary Bhesh Raj Adhikari, the left alliance has supported Oli's bid for premiership through correspondence to President Bhandari at the President's official residence. Similarly, Oli will act as the executive head of the party during the last two years when Dahal will be heading the government. Deuba-led Nepali Congress lost the recent polls to provincial assemblies and parliament in 2017.

The swearing-in was held 69 days after the completion of elections to the federal and provincial assemblies.

In 275 member House of Representatives, the lower house of parliament, Left Alliance secured an nearly two-thirds majority by winning 174 seats.
