Let us pray for that extra measure of strength and that extra measure of devotion, ' President Trump said, 'and let us seek to build a more just and peaceful world where every child can grow up without violence, worship without fear, and reach their God-given potential'. Our rights come from our creator. Held on the first Thursday in February, this breakfast calls together people of faith to celebrate their love for Jesus and pray for the country.

Rep. Steve Scalise, the Louisiana congressman who was shot past year during a Republican baseball practice, served as the keynote speaker for the breakfast - replacing Vice President Mike Pence, who is in Pyeongchang, South Korea, for the Olympics opening ceremony.

During his speech this morning, Trump repeated portions of Sophia's story for the assembled crowd, which included the girl herself. He did not talk about moving the U.S. Embassy to Jersasulum or his attempts to repeal the Johnson Amendment, both issues that were pushed by evangelicals. But the Senate later removed it from the final tax bill.

During his remarks, the president emphasized the interconnection between freedom of religion and a flourishing society. When Americans are able to live by their convictions to speak openly of faith, Trump said, "our nation can achieve anything at all". He spoke about seeing the "power of God's love" in Americans, particularly during the response to recent hurricanes and mass shootings.

"Sophia, you may only be 9-years-old, but you are already a hero to all of us in this room, and all over the world", said President Trump.

A large global audience was present for the breakfast, which was hosted by a Democrat and a Republican, Charlie Crist and Randy Hultgren.

The National Prayer Breakfast is put on by the Fellowship Foundation, which was long run by Doug Coe, who died a year ago.

The breakfast also paid tribute to one of its founders, who died past year in late February.

Coe, the longtime organizer of the breakfast, emphasized the foundation's focus on people-to-people relationships. Millions and millions of people lifted Sophia up in their prayers. "And I think partially we have managed to do that today".

"Let us resolve to find the best within ourselves", Trump said.

The National Prayer Breakfast is the event during which then-President Obama compared the Crusades to ISIS.

Other attendees said they appreciated the multi-day opportunity to connect with other people of faith.

The Serbian government announced that the event was organized for the 66th time in the presence of a large number of high-ranking officials from the United States and from around the world.
