The coverage of the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act raises some fundamental questions about the portrayal of women's rights in the media today. Not all women, you'll understand - you had to be aged at least 30 and have either property or a university education - but it was certainly a start.

At the moment parliament has more than 200 women in the House of Commons.

In 2017, women effectively worked "for free" for 51 days of the year because of the gender pay gap.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said that if they gain power, Labour will pardon all suffragettes who were convicted or jailed while fighting for women's right to vote. It also gave the right to vote to all men over 21.

The struggle by British women for suffrage began in the mid-19th century and Sheffield was the first place in the country to have formed a women's suffrage society run by women for women - The Sheffield Women's Political Association.

Yet the tides of the Suffrage movement are still surrounded in misinformation and confusion, with several leading members and activists in the movement identifying as lesbian, bi, or simply as women who were attracted to other women. But let's not remember 1918 as the year that a benevolent male parliament gifted women political equality in recognition of their work during the First World War and valiant campaigning for the vote, as certain articles in the past year claim.

"We see working class women, women of colour and queer women pushed out of the history books in favour of the heterosexual, white and middle class women".

"We shouldn't accept that what we have now is better than what it used to be, we should continue to push through and make sure we get more". Critics said their slogan should be not "Votes for Women" but "Votes for Ladies".

The law meant that women who occupied a house or were married to someone who occupied a house could now vote.

While the 1918 Representation of the People Act notably widened the franchise and paved the way for future reform, it would be another 10 years before all women in Britain would receive the vote. The channel has made another video (below) to celebrate 100 years of voting rights for women by asking three 100-year-old women to tell us what has changed for women over their lifetimes. Australia followed suit in 1902, though suffrage was still restricted for indigenous Australians.

A suffragette flag celebrating 100 years of women voting was raised outside Rochdale Town Hall on Tuesday (6 February).

The bag proved a central attraction, and visiting children, including the town's Guides, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have learnt about the events which led to women finally winning the right to vote.

Elsewhere, the campaign for women's suffrage and other social rights continued after 1918.

We want to highlight the work of women who epitomise the spirit of the Suffragettes and give voices to others in our city. "The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures".
