  • Nest rejoins Google to help Assistant take on Alexa

The move comes with Google ramping up efforts for smart home devices using its Google Assistant, the rival to Alexa for connected speakers and other devices.

Google hopes to combine Nest's smart thermostat and camera products and services with its own devices.

Parent company Alphabet Inc. spun Nest into a separate unit following its acquisition of the maker of smart thermostats and fire alarms.

In the same post, it was indicated that teams from Google and Nest will closely collaborate to realize the common goal of building on the gains so far achieved by the company's AI thrust with Google Assistant taking a central role in the project's implementation.

This fits in line with the appearance of Nest on-stage at the October Made by Google event previous year, talking about using Google's Machine Learning and Assistant in powering Nest products. Marwan Fawaz, the current CEO of Nest, will report to Google hardware SVP Rick Osterloh.

After working together on the Google Pixel 2, Google now owns majority of HTC's mobile design team and the non-exclusive rights to its intellectual property.

The product of choice that is now dominating the smart home is smart speakers, with Google and Amazon accounting for 94 percent of the devices in use, according to Strategy Analytics Inc.

Google actually purchased the Next in the year 2014 and now they will start working together to build up the future hardware components. "We've leveraged AI capabilities from Google in the past, especially in the computer vision space and facial recognition", Fawaz told CNET.

Fadell resigned as head of Nest in 2016, but the company kept going under Google's new Alphabet corporate structure. Both Google and Amazon continue to add new speakers to its lineup, while new competition has arrived, albeit delayed, from Apple Inc. with its premium HomePod, which goes on sale Friday. "Being part of the Google family, we get closer to that".

But it's open to question what practical difference this merger will merging Nest into Google actually make to customers?
