Redskins consider tagging Kirk Cousins, report says

05 February, 2018, 03:00 | Author: Lula Armstrong

"I don't take it personal", Cousins said when asked what he thought about the team not contacting him until the next day. No one knew for sure what the team planned to do, as Smith still had one year left on his deal with the Chiefs.

On Tuesday, Smith was traded - in principle - to Washington in exchange for CB Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick in this year's draft.

The number of donations from Chiefs fans to the Alex Smith Foundation has slowed from the initial surge on Thursday, but the updated tally is impressive. The 33-year-old former No. 1 draft pick is viewed as a cheaper, but older, version of Cousins, who was drafted by the Redskins in 2012, named the starter in 2015 and played the last two seasons on the one-year franchise tag.

That's evidenced by the guaranteed money Smith took from Washington, which Pluto wrote was closer to $50 million, than the $70 million originally reported (Smith would take the later sum if he suffered a serious injury). So they have a good team, they have a good quarterback, a guy that can move the chains keep everything going.

The biggest assumption in all this is that the Browns would even be interested in signing Cousins in the first place, a scenario that seems less likely now that the club has brought former Washington general manager Scot McCloughan to town to work as a consultant.

How do you feel about the possibility of Kirk Cousins being tagged?

"In this league and my story, I've learned that curveballs come all the time", Cousins told SiriusXM NFL Radio. I understood that. They wanted to do a deal, but because I wanted to go a little longer, it put them in a tough spot.

Yes, tagging Cousins would prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Teams can begin designating players for the franchise tag February 20. Cousins will undoubtedly be the most sought-after quarterback on the free agent market this summer. If it does, it's a unique opportunity I look forward to. But if Cousins doesn't want to play there, he could tell Washington and the new team that he isn't going to sign a long-term contract, which likely would sink the trade. Much like the transition tag, the Washington Redskins would have seven days to match a signed offer sheet. I think they're in a good place.

There are other factors at play in the Cousins sweepstakes. I mean, you name it, they have all the guys that can do it. He mentioned Jacksonville as an example; the Jaguars had not won more than five games since 2010 yet reached the AFC Championship Game this season. During that entire time, Schefter notes that the $34.5 million tag would still be accounted for against the salary cap. However, the two teams could agree to other picks.
