Claude Puel: Leicester City players will welcome back Riyad Mahrez

  • Mahrez deserves better than Leicester after failed Man City move- Algeria boss

Riyad Mahrez, 26, is reportedly set to be fined £200,000 by Leicester City, following the winger's absence from training after a deadline day move to Manchester City fell through, according to the Daily Mail.

The Algerian missed out on a deadline day move to City with the Premier League leaders reluctant to meet Leicester's £80m asking price, but Puel insisted he still had "friends" at Leicester despite his disappearing act.

The Citizens were expected to complete the deadline-day signing of the Algeria worldwide, who had handed in a transfer request at King Power Stadium in order to push through the move.

"I hope Riyad can clear his head and come back with us as he is a valuable player for us and crucial in our play", Puel said on Friday.

Pep Guardiola's side reportedly made a £65 million bid for the winger as they looked to add depth to their attack, following an injury to Germany worldwide Leroy Sane.

Puel remains optimistic, saying Mahrez will return to the fold. If the deal was around £75 million we might have seen more willingness from Leicester.

Mahrez can keep himself in the shop window by maintaining his good form for the next few months.

"We had to score another goal in the first half because it was a good period with quality for us, but Swansea defended very well". It is also the best decision for Riyad. "With organisation and calm we achieved an important point".

In the midst off all of this drama, Mahrez had suddenly decided that he no longer wanted to be a Leicester player and duly handed in a transfer request, just as he did last summer.

"They achieve one goal and could have achieved another and they were the team that created the most amount of chances against us since I arrived to Swansea".

"Leicester are not going to finish in the top four and they are not going to go down, so I don't understand why they were not prepared to let him go for £60m".
