  • Rain Thursday afternoon with snow Thursday night

In part, that's because an arctic front, trailing another weaker cold front, will turn rain over to snow today and cause temperatures to plummet from near 40 degrees at noon down into the teens by midnight, the National Weather Service said. Snow showers are also possible overnight, when temperatures dip into the teens. There could be a spotty light mix in the NW Hills through early afternoon; then by the evening commute, it will be scattered RAIN for most of the state (mix possible in the Hills). Temperatures are expected to reach the low 40s. Higher elevations, above 5,000 ft should see precipitation remain all snow during this time.

Rain moves in towards noon and sticks around the rest of the day. The only downfall for today is that it will be windy with gusts to near 30 miles per hour possible.

Lake effect snow will continue through tonight and into tomorrow. Winds: Southwest 7-12 miles per hour with gusts to 30 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.

For now, the Weather Service is expecting a few inches of snow in the North Carolina mountains and a lighter amount of snow and sleet in northwest SC and the North Carolina foothills.

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance for rain/snow and a high near 44 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Friday night there is a 20 percent chance of rain before 10 p.m. and a low of 37 degrees. Northwest wind 6 to 14 miles per hour. Southwest wind 6 to 9 miles per hour.

Snow is likely Saturday and Sunday.

Light rain is expected to develop Thursday afternoon.

Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of showers.

Snow mixed with rain is expected late this afternoon before turning to rain tonight as temperatures rise to about 3C. The average low in January this year was 16.9 degrees, noticeably cooler than the normal of 19.1 degrees.

Snow will likely end around 8am. Partly sunny, with a high near 37. Cloudy, with a low around 26.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 34. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 49.
