  • Govt to take FIR against Army to logical conclusion Mehbooba

He said the circumstances that were created by stone pelters in Shopian left no option for army men but to resort to firing in self defence.

Two civilians were killed when Army personnel fired at a stone-pelting mob in Ganovpora village in Shopian, prompting the Chief Minister to order an inquiry into the incident.

The Army had termed it as a pre-mature act on part of the police and the BJP had, in the state Assembly, been critical of naming the Army Major in the FIR. Subsequently, an FIR was filed under Ranbir Penal Code sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) against personnel of 10-Garhwal unit of the army.

The Mehbooba Mufti led state government has also ordered a magisterial probe into the incident even as a defence spokesman maintained that the soldiers opened firing in self defence.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had announced that the police would register a case against the army men involved in killing the youth. "Dismiss that government. Tell Mehbooba (Mufti) to withdraw the FIR else her government would be toppled".

Sources in the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) here said 19-year-old Rayees Ahmad admitted to the hospital on Saturday succumbed on Wednesday morning. With this, the death toll in Ganowpora village firing rose to three. Do we take her silence to mean yes.

The Army, meanwhile, had submitted its version of the incident, when its convoy was attacked in Shopian district, to the Jammu and Kashmir Police and explained its reasons for opening fire at the stone pelting mob, officials said today.

"The FIR is already lodged".

Kashmir Reader contacted SSP Shopian, Sri Ram Dinkar, who acknowledged that army has filed their version of the incident. And Army filed another counter FIR, in this case, said it was self-defence and asked to investigate. It also alleged that stone-pelters tried to lynch one of the officers and set a vehicle on fire. We will take the Shopian probe to its logical conclusion. A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) accompanying the convoy was hit on his head and fell unconscious suffering serious injury.
