McCabe Stepped Down Amid Pressure From Wray

  • Why is Trump wasting the chance to hype State of the Union speech

News is reporting that the day after FBI Director James Comey was sacked, President Donald Trump called then-acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe to complain that Comey was able to fly home on a government plane.

It is unclear what exactly prompted McCabe's decision to step down early.

Last week, The Washington Post reported that after James Comey was sacked in May 2017 and McCabe assumed the director's job on an acting basis, the president asked him in a private discussion whom he had voted for in the presidential election.

When Fox News correspondent John Roberts pressed Sanders on Trump's public comments about McCabe, which Roberts described as a "public relations campaign" against him, Sanders said the president stood by those remarks.

McCabe recused himself from that probe but remained involved in the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton, one of McAuliffe's closest allies.

Comey's firing is of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller, who's investigating whether Trump broke the law by firing Comey amid the ongoing Russian Federation probe. McCabe's role is among those under scrutiny.

"It's like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you're 40", Strzok wrote in the text.

The FBI's inspector general launched a probe past year into whether McCabe had any conflicts of interest in the Clinton investigation.

McCabe had been widely expected to retire upon his eligibility date, but his departure from the FBI's No. 2 slot is effective Monday, according to the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an internal personnel move. As recently as last week, Mr. McCabe had told people he hoped to stay until he was eligible to retire in mid-March.

Yet the Federal Bureau of Investigation has released documents showing McCabe's role in the Clinton case began in February 2016, following his appointment as deputy director and three months after his wife lost her bid for a state Senate seat.

Trump has claimed Comey's leadership left the bureau in "tatters".

The inspector general is also looking into whether Comey made improper decisions, including his decision to announce the FBI would not recommend charges and his subsequent decision to publicly announce he was re-opening the investigation just 11 days before the 2016 election, after new emails were discovered. According to the report, McCabe replied, "okay, sir", prompting Trump to hang up the phone. Trump pressured Wray to fire McCabe, but Wray threatened to resign instead, Axios reported on January 23.

The leak of the Post story suggested that the rift between the White House and McCabe had reached an untenable position.

McCabe has always been a controversial figure at the bureau.
