Australia's Jason Day sank an 18-inch birdie putt on the sixth playoff hole Monday to defeat Sweden's Alex Noren and win the US PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open.

World number 14 Day's United States title total, topped by his 2015 PGA Championship title, also includes the 2015 Torrey Pines crown, putting him alongside such two-time winners as Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson.

The spotlight had been all on Woods as the 14-time major champion wrapped up his first US PGA Tour tournament in a year with an even par 72 for a 72-hole total of 285.

American Ryan Palmer also made the playoff at 10-under par but dropped out when he could only make par at the first playoff hole, the par-five 18 hole at Torrey, while Day and Noren both made birdies.

2- 18th hole: Noren and Day both hit the green in two and two-putt for birdie.

Beginning at the par-five 18th, Noren found the first cut off the tee but saw his approach come up short and spin back into the water hazard, as Day drove right and elected to lay up from the rough.

Brisbane native Cameron Smith finished tied 20th at four-under courtesy of a closing 72, while Australian Open victor Cameron Davis plummeted down the leaderboard with an 80 to sit at three-over.

That's just another reason Noren says he has "dreamt of winning" on the U.S. tour.

1- 18th hole (par 5): Noren layed up and pitched close, meaning Day had to make a three-metre birdie to continue.

'It has been a long time coming, Day said.

It was the third playoff in as many weeks on the PGA Tour, all of them at least four holes and two of them lasting at least six.

McIlroy, who sat out the last three months of 2017, was trying to win for the first time in 17 months. "I know that a year ago wasn't the greatest season for me".

Noren is a nine-time victor on the European Tour who is No. 19 in the world, trying to make his mark in America. Noren, who had a one-shot lead at the start of the final round, closed with a 73. I'm very thankful for my whole team. "It was going to be, 'Can I shoot low scores?' I didn't, but I grinded out some good rounds".

Woods said it was a mostly positive week, and it was hard to argue considering he was returning from his fourth back surgery.

"Very pleased", Woods said.

But there won't be any spectators allowed at Torrey Pines today.
