  • Flanagan is known for the Stephen King adaptation 'Gerald's Game.'

Despite some changes, the film and book are close enough in content that the film version of Doctor Sleep will likely be able to toe the line between the two, making it a true sequel to both the book and the movie.

Warner Brothers studios announced today that a film adaptation of Stephen King's 2013 book "Doctor Sleep" has been greenlit for production, though no release date has been set.

The source novel follows Danny Torrance - the child gifted with the Shining, which is basically psychic powers - into adulthood where he now suffers from alcoholism following many years of psychological trauma following the events that took place in the Overlook Hotel. Goldsman will still be on board as executive director. But the main story of the novel can be told without dwelling on Danny's past. However, the drinking problem also dulls his "shining" powers. Those powers return when he embraces sobriety and uses his gift to help the dying at a hospice. They've found that their powers grow if they inhale the "steam" that comes off others with the power to shine, when they are suffering painful deaths. While King himself famously disliked that adaptation, it did well at the box office and starred Jack Nicholson in the lead, along with Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd.

Deadline reports the movie is gearing up with Gerald's Game helmer Mike Flanagan tapped to direct as well as re-write Akiva Goldsman's original script. On the Netflix side of things, Flanagan is now working with Macy on a production of "The Haunting of Hill House". Flanagan and Macy are now in production on The Haunting of Hill House for Netflix, and their other collaborations are Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Before I Wake.
