American Eastern Standard Time for about 10 seconds, spewing violent exhaust and steam, a video on SpaceX's official twitter showed.

"Falcon Heavy hold-down firing this morning was good", Musk said in the tweet.

Photos posted by SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk then showed the new rocket inside its Florida hangar. It was initially announced in 2011, and it remained for years a goal in SpaceX's horizon, since there have been several frustrating attempts on test runs in 2015 and 2016, given the fact that the Heavy Falcon is already assembled and ready for takeoff, it is safe to say that failed attempts pushed SpaceX to this point.

The world's largest rocket is essentially a trio of Falcon 9 cores bound together.

If the Falcon Heavy launches successfully, it will become a commercially available spacecraft capable of carrying heavier payloads into Earth's orbit. The company has done a lot of preparation and simulation, but you can't know how a rocket's going to behave in the air until it actually launches.

As confirmed by SpaceX in December 2017, flight-proven boosters, once returned to land, do not go back to McGregor, Texas, for additional testing following their first flights but are instead refurbished and put through a longer static fire to verify booster health and performance. That's three times as many engines as are on SpaceX's current workhorse rocket, the Falcon 9.

The SpaceX CEO has said the vehicle will remain in "deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn't blow up on ascent".

For the Falcon Heavy's first payload, Musk has picked his own midnight-cherry-red Tesla Roadster, which would be launched on a trajectory aimed for Mars orbit. That's been customary ever since a Falcon 9 exploded during a 2016 practice engine firing, destroying both rocket and satellite.

The Falcon Heavy is a reusable super heavy-lift launch vehicle.
