The man behind China's economic policy also took the stage at Davos on Wednesday, pledging to further open the country to the world in a direct echo of President Xi Jinping's speech at the forum past year.

Macron said in November glyphosate would be banned in France within three years, rejecting a European Union decision to extend its use for five years after a heated debate over whether the Monsanto-developed weed-killer causes cancer.

From little to none " We've also chose to make France a model in the fight against climate change", Mr Macron said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

President of France outlined his agenda to create a more competitive France and address the concerns of many French citizens on globalization.

Switching back to his native tongue, Macron also noted globalisation "is going through a major crisis" with some states engaging in a free-for-all for their own benefit.

So, whichever way you look at it, going green makes flawless sense. The president said: "We'll have to see at the European level whether we want new sanctions, I am in favour of having them. It's absolutely key. In my view we have to redesign a 10-year strategy to make Europe an actual economic, social, green, scientific and political power".

Argentina's Macri also condemned the "unacceptable authoritarian slide" of Venezuela under Maduro and called for "transparent elections", adding: "It has not been a democracy for some time".

But much of what is drawing tech firms to Paris predates Macron.

The World Economic Forum is set to be held on January 23-26, and some 70 heads of state, as well as 340 ministers, are expected to attend the event.
