  • The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which killed and injured dozens of people in Kabul Afghanistan

Reporting from the scene ToLOnews journalist Gulabuddin Ghubar said he saw at least 20 ambulances racing away from the scene taking the wounded to hospital.

Public healthy ministry spokesperson Mohammad Ismayeel Kawosi confirmed the numbers, the channel reported.

The latest attack will add pressure on President Ashraf Ghani and his USA allies, who have expressed growing confidence that a new more aggressive military strategy has succeeded in driving Taliban insurgents back from major provincial centres.

Hassina Safi, a member of High Peace Council, which is charged with negotiating with the Taliban, told AFP: "It targeted our checkpoint".

Thick, dark smoke could be seen rising from the site of the explosion near the old Interior Ministry building.

The Jamuriate hospital, the nearest to the scene, was overwhelmed, with many people lying in corridors waiting to be treated. The force of the blast shattered windows of surrounding buildings while causing few low-rise structures to collapse.

Outside, civilians walked through debris-covered streets carrying wounded people on their backs as paramedics loaded several bodies at a time into ambulances to take them to medical facilities around the city. There were dozens of people who were killed and wounded.

The blast comes just days after 22 people were killed during a 17-hour siege of Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel and the offices of Save The Children in the eastern city of Jalalabad were attacked.

The explosion ripped through Kabul shortly before 1pm on Saturday afternoon and shook building kilometers away.

India on Saturday strongly condemned the "barbaric and dastardly" terrorist attack in Kabul on the same day.
