The count begins at 5:30 p.m. and wraps up Friday morning for a feeding event at Tulsa's Iron Gate at 501 South Cincinnati.

Results of the 2018 count will be compiled and analyzed and will be released later this year.

The Point-in- Time Count is coordinated by the Northwest Continuum of Care and is the annual documentation of the extent of homelessness in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey counties.

"That brings about $9.5 million into the community and one of the requirements for applying for that money is that you have this understanding of how many people are out there homeless overnight", Coalition for the Homeless executive director Natalie Harris said. In 2016, there were 16 individual homeless while there were seven homeless in a family in the city. "Families with children are the most sensitive to those rent increases". "Los Angeles is absolutely at the center of a crisis of housing affordability". "But I think the more we are aware of it and we now have safe spaces identified in the community where they come, we see more of them", Cranston said. "Thanks to years of collaboration, local organizations are doing a better job of coordinating services". "Once again, in order to make this count possible we need as many volunteers as possible". "With an accurate count, we can demonstrate to our nation's leaders that resources need to be directed toward homeless services and housing".

"Shelters have changed over the past 50 years", he said. In the Big Sandy region, WestCare Emergency Shelter can be contacted at 606-432-9442; or, in cases of domestic violence, Turning Point Domestic Violence Services can be contacted at 1-800-649-6605. Because of that, people have to join a program and work that program. Lextran will offer the homeless free rides to shelters during that period. Of the 83, three were considered to be unsheltered homeless.

Bringing supplies and blankets, their efforts are part of the annual national Point in Time homeless count.

The Homeless Alliance is teaming up with the City and the Coalition to End Poverty to conduct the survey.

"Tonight, we've probably served over 100 plates of food", said Caroline Smith, a volunteer at the shelter.

For some, reaching out to the city's homeless population is all about making sure nobody is alone.
