  • Apple Books makeover has Amazon in its sights

Earlier today, a report by Bloomberg mentioned that Apple is working on big changes for the Books app (previously called iBooks) and the Apple Books Store.

"The new app, due to be released in coming months, will include a simpler interface that better highlights books now being read and a redesigned digital book store that looks more like the new App Store launched a year ago", he said, citing sources familiar with the project's development. This new app will have tabs where you can view the books you're now reading, along with a tab dedicated to audiobooks.

Apple has also reportedly hired a lead executive from Audible, the Amazon-owned audiobook platform, to help reinvigorate its e-book efforts. Furthermore, Apple's e-book business took a hit in 2014 after the U.S. Department of Justice fined the company $450 million as part of an antitrust lawsuit that involved five major publishers.

The iBooks app was renamed to just Books in iOS 11.3, which was recently released to developers, but the real changes are coming in the following months, according to the report.

The update should revive Apple's digital books business and re-establish the company as an Amazon competitor.

Apple's services business has been a bright spot for the company for the past few years-services like the App Store, Apple Music, and iCloud have been money makers.

Amazon's Audible had always been the exclusive supplier for audiobooks to Apple, but the two companies had to change their relationship a year ago after regulators had taken issue with the Apple effectively shutting out other sellers.

After the legal blow, Apple's digital-services work focused more on Apple Music, App Store sales, and movie rentals. Before that, Zafar was a content vice president at Barnes & Noble's Nook e-reader division, according to his LinkedIn profile.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.
