California pair starved kids until they stopped growing

  • 13 siblings held captive — how did no one else know

The children were reared on the graveyard shift, with the family staying up all night and going to bed shortly before dawn, Hestrin said.

The litany of abuses was enough to invoke a house of horrors that apparently went unnoticed for years in California and Texas until Sunday, when a 17-year-old girl managed to escape and call 911. Investigators went to the house and freed the children, prompting days of investigations that led to a series of charges Thursday.

District Attorney Mike Hestrin revealed yesterday horrific and chilling details of the physical and emotional abuse he says the children of David and Louise Turpin were subjected to. "In this business, we're faced with looking at human depravity and that's what we're looking at here".

The Riverside County Department of Public Social Services is seeking court authorization to provide oversight and care for the 13 siblings "to the extent that's necessary", Riverside County Department of Public Social Services Director Susan von Zabern said.

Neighbor Kimberly Milligan said one of those rare encounters occurred in 2015 and especially stood out.

David Turpin's father, James, the children's' grandfather, said from his home in Princeton, West Virginia, that he did not believe the reports about the abuse. "They were just like any ordinary family". "They immediately shut down".

She told cops she was terrified her parents would killer her if she was caught.

Dr. Roshini Raj, an associate professor of medicine at New York University, told HLN that it may take a long time to get the siblings to a healthy and normal weight. The children were often left shackled to their beds for "weeks or even months at a time", he said. And if the children were found to wash their hands above the wrist area, they would be chained up again for allegedly playing in the water.

Most of the Turpin children were homeschooled but one of the older boys was allowed to attend classes at a local college, Hestrin said. "But this has been going on before they even had children. they were real private, and they didn't come around much".

"They would buy food including pies, apple pies, pumpkin pies, leave it on the counter, let the children look at it, but not eat the food", Hestrin said.

The children were discovered early Sunday morning after one of them, a 17-year-old, escaped the home through a window and called police.

She was so emaciated that officers first thought she was a young child.

The children rescued from the USA home dubbed the House of Horrors spent two years plotting an escape before their parents were arrested, new court details have revealed. He said several of the children didn't know what a police officer was. The dogs will be available for adoption, according to officials. Hestrin said the victim was one of Turpin's daughters under the age of 14.

These are the conditions authorities say they endured. Other charges include seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult and six counts of child abuse or neglect.

"We are not charging torture on the 2-year-old", Hestrin said. David Turpin also faces one count of committing a lewd act by force or fear, the first indication from authorities the case may involve sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, David and Louise Turpin are being held on $12 million bail each.

The couple's next court date is set for Friday, February 23. If convicted of all charges, they could spend 94 years to life behind bars. But, ultimately, whatever happens to Louise and David Turpin, their children must somehow move on and carry on with their lives.
