Blackberry unveils Jarvis for self-driving and connected vehicle security

  • BlackBerry chief executive John Chen called the company's new cybersecurity software for autos

Jarvis works by scanning all the software components in an autonomous vehicle in real-time, sniffing out any vulnerabilities and prodding auto makers to fix them before they get pried open by hackers.

The product has been named Blackberry Jarvis. However, he said, it could eventually be expanded to assist in fields such as healthcare, industrial automation, aerospace, and defense.

BlackBerry's cloud-based tool, which can be customised for each automaker's supply chain, automates the process of verifying software components, which would otherwise be a time-consuming manual task.

For OEMs, Jarvis helps to assure that software adheres to industry standards, and it can be used to scan binary files at any stage of software development.

BlackBerry CEO John Chen described Jarvis as "one of a kind" offering that is easy to use as well as being scalable and cost-effective for manufacturers of all sizes. This includes the ability to assess new software under consideration and the capability to evaluate existing software already in production. The WannaCry attack raised awareness of BlackBerry's security software business, which presently focuses on managing secure connections on mobile devices.

He said carmakers "must ensure the code complies with industry and manufacturer-specific standards while simultaneously battle-hardening a very large and tempting attack surface for cybercriminals".

BlackBerry has already begun trialing Jarvis with some automakers including Jaguar Land Rover, it said. Results are provided immediately via dashboards with specific advisories.

BlackBerry has launched a cybersecurity product called Jarvis, which is initially aimed at automakers.

JLR said Jarvis reduced the time for its code security assessment from thirty days to seven minutes.

In 2010 it acquired QNX, a Unix-like real-time operating system it used as the basis for revamping its smartphone software, but which has a long history of use in automobiles. As Reuters notes, the company has recently announced deals or partnerships with Delphi Automotive, Chinese search firm Baidu Inc, Qualcomm, Ford, and auto supplier Denso - with all announcements related to either self-driving tech or the automotive industry at large.
