  • Ecuador Grants Nationality To WikiLeaks Founder

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's name has appeared in an Ecuadorian government database of citizen identification numbers, fuelling speculation that he may have received citizenship from the Andean country.

After a year in which Ecuador's president has spoken out against Assange, Ecuador's Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa said she hoped to find a solution to his dilemma.

The UK Foreign Office has rejected an appeal from Ecuador requesting diplomatic status be granted to WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange, who has lived in the country's London embassy for years.

Ecuador gave Assange political asylum after he sought refuge in its London embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden to face a rape allegation, which he denies.

She also said she feared threats to Mr Assange's life coming from third party states.

Reuters reported it had found an entry for "Julian Paul Assange" in Ecuador's civilian registry.

"The Ecuadoran government is empowered to grant nationality to the protected person and thus facilitate. his inclusion in the host state", Espinosa told reporters.

Ecuador's Foreign Ministry in a statement said it was seeking to resolve Assange's situation, without making reference to the citizenship issue. The UK did not grant that request, nor are we in talks with Ecuador on this matter.

Mr Assange has been in the small embassy in Knightsbridge ever since. Those original allegations have since been dropped.

Following Sweden's decision in May to end the probe, British police said that they would arrest Assange if he left the embassy, as he still faces charges of failing to surrender to the court that was hearing the extradition case. Assange fears Sweden will hand him over to United States authorities who could prosecute him for publishing the documents and possibly sentence him to death.

Ecuador said the United Kingdom should guarantee him "safe passage" to Ecuador if he leaves the embassy. Mr Assange is unlawfully and arbitrarily detained by the United Kingdom authorities and must be released.

The UK has also refused to guarantee that Mr Assange will not be extradited to the USA where he could face charges for his role in releasing classified military documents.

Moreno issued a warning reminding Assange not to meddle in politics. Ecuador has repeatedly urged Assange not to interfere in the affairs of other countries following his frequent online comments on worldwide issues.

The demand for an end to the state persecution of Julian Assange must be taken up by the global working class.
