Pats DC Matt Patricia reportedly prefers Giants head coaching job

According to the NY Daily News, "all signs point to" the Giants naming Patricia as their next head coach once the Patriots' playoff run comes to an end.

In Detroit, I hear Pats defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is the choice over Houston's defensive boss, Mike Vrabel-but Patricia favors the Giants.

The strong belief is that Matt Patricia will not be defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots next season, leaving the cozy comfort of Bill Belichick's staff for a head coaching gig of his own.

As head coaching openings are starting to be filled around the league, the Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals are still looking.

All signs pointed to Patricia taking over in Detroit, where he interviewed with during New England's postseason bye week.

In hindsight fate smiled on the Lions when former general manager Martin Mayhew wanted to hire Ken Whisenhunt in 2014. Injuries to Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall, Justin Pugh, and Weston Richburg clearly played a factor, but New York's offensive struggles date back to the start of the 2016 season. Gettleman was sacked as Panthers GM over the summer, just prior to Wilks' only season as defensive coordinator, but their time in Carolina overlapped while Wilks was the defensive backs coach under defensive back Sean McDermott, who left for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job.

In those six years heading the defense, Patricia has helped the Patriots win a pair of Super Bowls and make the AFC title game each year. That being said, head coaching searches have a way of settling in even as top candidates remain active in the playoffs. With the Panthers eliminiated last week, Wilks is available for hire immediately.
