"Amazing trip to #Cancun ended last night with our condo shaking like insane as a result of an natural disaster off the coast of Honduras".

Tsunami advisories were canceled overnight for Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean after a powerful quake struck in the Caribbean Sea.

"Based on the preliminary natural disaster parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1,000 kilometers of the quake epicenter", the US National Weather Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The quake struck in the sea Tuesday night about 125 miles north-northeast of Barra Patuca, Honduras, and 188 miles southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands.

Honduran President Juan Orlando tweeted, "In face of the natural disaster registered in our country, we have activated the emergency system, please remain calm, report any emergency to @ 911Honduras".

After the natural disaster, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an advisory, warning areas like Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands of a potential tsunami.


On Jan. 9, 2018, at 10 p.m. ET, one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the Caribbean off the coast of Honduras.

The tsunami warning were in effect for two hours and then the advisories were withdrawn.

The tremor occurred in the sea between the island of Cuba and the coasts of Honduras and Belize, according to maps published by USGS.

Other than cracks in some buildings in the region, no other damage or injuries were reported.
