In 1942 the National Anthem Committee wrote that "it is of paramount importance that emphasis be placed upon the singing of the National Anthem".

President Trump appeared to struggle with the lyrics of the national anthem at a college football match last night, hours after renewing demands that professional players show respect for the song. He also sang part of the national anthem - starting, then stopping, then starting again - which led some to speculate he didn't know the whole thing. Although it is not sure of what Trump was singing, Twitterati made up their mind claiming that the president didn't know the words of the anthem. He renewed the attack earlier Monday on Twitter. Did anyone else see that just now?

Trump has criticised football players in the past for not treating the national anthem with sufficient respect.

Check out a few more reactions here.

Most of the players from Georgia and Alabama remained in their locker rooms during the anthem - though Alabama star running back Bo Scarbrough was caught on audio yelling "F-k Trump" in the tunnel at the Atlanta stadium before taking the field.

There was another famous face also in attendance at the game. The majority of black voters disagree with Trump's condemnation of the National Football League protests.

The Flag Code covers aspects of etiquette when the anthem is played in some detail.

The President had previously condemned the action of some athletes who chose to kneel during the national anthem before NFL games. Pence, in a statement, said at the time:"I left today's Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem". He has even changed the banner image on his Twitter account to a photograph of him standing during the anthem before the game.
