Senate Democrats Obtain Enough Support to Force Net Neutrality Vote

Senate Democrats who are trying to force a vote on reinstating net neutrality rules have hit a key milestone. Previously a seldom-used, obscure law, the CRA was used multiple times a year ago to overturn regulations issued in the waning days of the Obama administration. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln, would bring net neutrality rules power to the state level.

The announcement by the Democrats comes just one day after Missouri Sen.

Critics fear the decision to repeal the rules, which require that all internet traffic be treated equally, opens the door for internet service providers (ISPs) to "slow down" or "speed up" certain internet traffic.

Unfortunately, as a press conference held on Tuesday morning in Washington DC made plain, political support for the measure is nearly entirely thanks to the fact that Democrats feel they can use it to win votes in the midterm elections in November this year.

Now that the FCC is controlled 3-2 by the Republican party, it has become the source of all that's wrong in the world for Democrats. This act gives Congress the ability to overturn new federal regulations with a joint resolution passed with a simple majority in both the Senate and the House, and the president would also have to sign the bill.

In short, there are no special rules in the House to guarantee a vote on the CRA resolution.

Those on the side of net neutrality argue that instead of restoring "internet freedom", these rules expose consumers.

Speaking with the unified voice of the Internet Association, a trade group representing social media platforms, ride sharing companies and all manner of entertainment, the websites we live on announced their intent to join lawsuits against the FCC's proposed changes to net neutrality. But a vote in the Senate would put senators on the record in an election year.

Amid the harsh criticism of the repeal from consumer groups including Free Press, Pai on Wednesday pulled out of a planned appearance at this week's CES tech industry convention after reportedly receiving death threats. "IA intends to act as an intervenor in judicial action against this order and, along with our member companies, will continue our push to restore strong, enforceable net neutrality protections through a legislative solution". After the FCC repealed the 2015 rules, opponents have been gearing up legal arguments.
