  • Sears closing Waterloo store by early April

Two Kmart stores are closing in our region.

Liquidation sales will begin as early as January 12 at the stores slated for closure, the release said.

Alyssa Rodriguez, a sales supervisor at the Kmart in Portland, said store staff was notified of the closure Thursday. It's one of 39 Sears stores and 64 Kmart stores deemed "unprofitable".

Another round of Kmart and Sears closings is slated for the coming weeks, Sears Holding Company announced.

Sears Holdings has struggled financially over the past decade and has greatly reduced the number of stores it operates.

The latest store closings include Kmarts in Crossville, Goodlettsville and Greeneville, Tenn., and in Statesboro, Albany and Jesup, Ga., and a Sears store in Centerville, Ga.

Military Avenue Business Improvement District Executive Director Leah Weycker said Sears has been a staple of west side retail for more than 40 years.

Sears shares dropped more than 60 percent over the past 12 months, including a 4.5 percent drop Thursday.

In July 2015, Sears Holdings created New York-based Seritage Growth Properties, an independent real estate investment trust (REIT), to better manage its remaining assets and to take on the role of a landlord.

The move means Kmart will have three Louisiana stores: 7000 Veterans Blvd. and 2940 Veterans Blvd.in Metairie and in Lake Charles. Red Oak's Kmart is the only store in KMAland impacted by the closings.

Sears never relocated to the thriving Christiana Mall area, although it later opened a store to the north in Concord Mall. Macy's and J.C. Penney have also been shuttering hundreds of stores.
