Cancer rates have plummeted 26 percent, study says

  • Cancer death rates decreasing

The report estimates that this year there will be 1.7 million new cancer cases and 609,640 cancer deaths in the United States. Although African-American women develop breast cancer at similar or slightly lower rates, they are more likely to die from the disease compared with white women, according to the American Cancer Society's facts and figures on African Americans and cancer. Since 1991, the cancer death rate has fallen 26 percent.

A new report shows cancer-related deaths are down in the U.S.

"If we, the cancer community, could do a better job of implementing those things we already know work", Bennett said, "many, many lives could be saved".

'This new report reiterates where cancer control efforts have worked, particularly the impact of tobacco control, ' said Dr Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. Although prostate cancer accounts for 19 percent of cancers in men and breast cancer for 30 percent of cancers in women, the most common cause of cancer death in both sexes is lung cancer, which accounts for one-quarter of cancer deaths in both sexes.

However, he noted that "tobacco remains by far the leading cause of cancer deaths today, responsible for almost three in 10 cancer deaths".

"The decline in cancer mortality over the past two decades is primarily the result of steady reductions in smoking and advances in early detection and treatment", the report reads.

"The overall decline is driven by decreasing death rates for the four major cancer sites", the group said.

On the heels of awareness campaigns and a push to encourage Americans to get more frequent colonoscopies and check ups, death rates for colorectal and prostate cancers are less than half of what they were in 1993, helping to cap overall mortality.

Siegel, MPH, from the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, and colleagues estimated the number of new cancer cases and deaths that will occur in the United States in 2018.

State-to-to state data revealed a mixed bag of improvements and continuing issues.

While progress is evident, stark racial disparities remain.

Lung cancer incidence rates continued to decline about twice as fast in men as in women, reflecting differences in tobacco use and more smoking among females in some populations.

In men, prostate cancer causes 9 percent of deaths, while 7 percent are due to pancreatic cancer and 6 percent to liver cancer.
