Apple Music executive Jimmy Iovine leaving company, reports say

  • Apple Music Chief Jimmy Iovine To Depart Company In August

According to Billboard, Iovine's exit will be timed with the vesting of stock he acquired when first joining Apple. Cue's division has moved forward with its own plans for a slate of original shows, which may not be part of Apple Music.

Spotify just announced that it now has 70 million paid subscribers, expanding its lead over Apple Music.

Look for Jimmy Iovine to leave Apple Music in August. Apple's achievement is worth mentioning since the nascent service has been quick to narrow the gap with Spotify.

What is the future for Apple Music?

Since taking on his role at Apple Music, the user subscription has surpassed 30 million since launching in 2015. He was a key proponent of both the device and the music download service. Shazam's tech could be integrated into more Apple products in the future.

While Iovine was instrumental in the launch of Beats-based Apple Music, his importance at Apple has been on the decline.

Unnamed sources disclose that Iovine is planning a departure from the streaming service in August. The success has earned Iovine the respect among technologists that he's long enjoyed as a music industry executive.

Replacing Iovine will prove very hard, however. Iovine worked as a recording engineer with legends like John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen and as a producer for big acts like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, and U2.

Before founding Beats headphones, Iovine was known as a star-making music executive, creating Interscope Records in 1990 and signing distribution rights for legendary rappers such as Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.
