  • The remains of a hot air balloon is seen on the ground near the ancient city of Luxor Friday after a fatal crash

At least one tourist was killed and several others were injured after a hot air balloon carrying about 20 tourists crashed near the southern Egyptian city of Luxor, according to state news agency MENA. The woman killed was a 36-year-old South African and the injured were tourists from Spain, South Africa and Argentina, according to a government official.

"About 20 people were on board when the accident occurred on Friday".

Those on board the flight included a number of foreign nationals along with Egyptian tourists.

One of the main attractions is the Karnak temple, which dates back thousands of years. The Valley of the Kings, which has dozens of ancient tombs, including that of King Tutankhamun, is located just outside the city.

The balloon, which was carrying 21 foreign tourists, was crashed due to bad weather and strong winds, officials said.

A fact-finding committee later found that the accident was probably caused by a gas leak near the burner, sparking a blaze that spread throughout the balloon.

Sixteen people were injured in a Luxor hot air balloon flight in 2011 as well.
