  • Danny Higginbotham says Ross Barkley would be the ideal signing for Chelsea

Barkley opted against leaving Everton while carrying a hamstring injury that has forced him to sit on the sidelines so far this season.

Barkley has only six months remaining on his contract, which means a reduced price could be agreed between the clubs after Chelsea offered double the amount in the summer.

Chelsea have reportedly beaten Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who will set them back around £15m.

New boss Sam Allardyce has always been resigned to the playmaker's departure and Tottenham were expected to rival Chelsea for Barkley.

Ross Barkley now looks more likely than ever to be a Chelsea player by the end of the month, according to Ladbrokes.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with England worldwide and Everton star Ross Barkley for quite some time and the latest reports are very positive for the Blues.

Barring any late problems, Barkley could be a Chelsea player by the end of the day, bringing an end to a 13-year stay on Merseyside that saw him make 179 first team appearances since making his debut in 2011.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea's willingness to capture Barkley sparks Tottenham into life but Blues boss Conte is intent on strengthening his ranks, with a move for West Ham United forward Andy Carroll also under consideration.

Now Antonio Conte, who has called on the club's hierarchy to add to his squad, will strengthen with Barkley, who is eligible for all four competitions.
