  • Protesters are venting anger over economic hardships alleged corruption and the ruling elite

The state TV report made the reference in a package on the ongoing demonstrations that began on Thursday.

Reports say authorities in Iran are imposing the ban as a security measure during rare anti-government protests over rising cost of food and fuel prices which has gone violent.

In Tehran, some 4,000 people gathered at the Musalla prayer ground, calling for criminal trials for Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, leaders in the Green Movement who have been under house arrest since 2011.

Israel's Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said on Sunday that Iran's "murderous regime", which has repeatedly threatened to wipe Israel off the map, will "disappear", while Israel will "exist forever".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, whose administration struck the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, campaigned on freeing the men, though they remain detained.

"The government will show no tolerance for those who damage public properties, violate public order and create unrest in the society", he said in remarks on state TV. Small crowds have gathered in Tehran and police have used water cannon to disperse protesters at a major intersection - as captured in a video obtained by BBC Persian.

What about the war of words with Donald Trump?

And he accused the authorities of "squandering the nation's wealth to fund terrorism abroad".

They have spread to small towns throughout the country and have the potential to grow in size. Opposition figures have always been silenced or sent into exile. The economic protests initially just put pressure on Mr Rouhani's administration, but purported footage from recent demonstrations have included anti-government chants. Demonstrators accused former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of stealing the election and blocking genuine democratic movements. They were apparently undeterred by the threat of an "iron fist" issued earlier in the day by the head of the Revolutionary Guard, charged with protecting Iran's Islamic theocracy.
