Man drives truck off Astoria pier into river

  • Timofey Erofeeff is facing numerous charges after driving his truck off a pier in Oregon

Timofey Erofeeff, 27, was allegedly trespassing at an Astoria marina when the chase began. Officers made contact with him about 10 a.m.as he was driving a red F-150, police said.

He is charged with six counts, including attempt to elude, criminal trespass, escape, interfering with an officer, offensive littering and reckless driving.

He took off when they approached, prompting a short police pursuit that stopped short of Pier 2 of North Tongue Point.

In a spectacular show of poor judgment, Erofeeff sped right off the end of the pier and into the frigid Columbia River.

An Oregon man drove his truck off a pier and then swam several hundred feet while trying to escape police officers.

When he reached the pier, he couldn't even climb back up-the pier was too tall. Fishermen on a nearby boat helped rescue him.

Because of the elevated pier, officers, threw Erofeeff a life vest and floatation disc until he was plucked out of the waters by a skiff, Fox 12 reported.

All told, Erofeeff spent about 20 minutes in the icy water. "Mr. Erofeeff should be thankful too".

Erofeeff was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. He also allegedly violated his parole and was previously arrested in two other OR counties for theft.

A fuel sheen was visible where Erofeeff entered the water.

The police called the Coast Guard and prepped a helicopter should it be needed.
