The failed presidential candidate has received the distinction 22 times - more than any other person. Pope Francis took third place with 3 percent of respondents, and the rest of the top dozen men included politicians, religious figures and billionaires.

The more detailed data from Gallup showed Trump was tied for seventh with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

President Donald Trump followed close behind Obama's 17 percent of the responses with 14 percent according the the survey, which has been taken almost every year since 1946.

Although Trump won easily among Republicans, with 35 percent naming him as the man they admire most, Obama led among both Democrats, with 39 percent naming him, and independents, with 12 percent saying they admire him most, according to the results.

Obama's 10th year as most admired man makes him second only to former President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Former first lady Michelle Obama, in a close second to Clinton's 9 percent, came in with 7 percent of the polling for most admired woman.

Obama retaining his title this year is a bit unusual. On the men's side, the 2016 election winner wasn't the, well, winner.

Clinton has topped the list 16 years running and taken the top spot 22 times total, which Gallup said was more than anyone else - man or woman.

Obama has earned the distinction as the most admired man 10 times, coming in second to 12-time victor, former president Dwight Eisenhower.

Seventeen percent of those polled found that Barack Obama was the most admired man living anywhere in the world, a title he's had for the past 10 years. "She managed to win this year because she remains arguably more prominent than other contenders".

Results are based on telephone interviews conducted with a random sample of 1,049 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 USA states and the District of Columbia.

Nine percent of participants said they most admired Clinton, which was a decline from her 12% rating past year.
