Nintendo Switch 64GB Game Cards Allegedly Delayed Until 2019

Well, this could mean that game developer will possibly hit pause on releasing titles on the Switch and opt to delay the release until Nintendo releases larger cartridges. The catch is that Switch owners would need a very large SD card to hold a few games. At the very least, we might see Nintendo take advantage of the extra space afforded next year.

The delay comes after it was announced that 10 million units of Nintendo Switch have been moved.

Nintendo is delaying the 64GB Nintendo Switch cartridges to the third-party game developers until 2019.

As it stands, the biggest Switch cartridges can hold 32GB of data, so quite a bit less than the 50GB capacity of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One's Blu-ray discs. Nintendo chose cartridges because they're smaller, and less prone to errors if you shake them up when using the console in the portable mode.

The Japanese gaming giant originally planned to deliver 64GB cartridges to developers by the second half of 2018.

There are some problems with the Nintendo Switch cartridges themselves.

As Kotaku previously reported, Nintendo's Switch games keep their size slim, with downloads for Super Mario Odyssey, Arms and Splatoon 2 ranging from 2-6GB.

Nintendo reportedly won't offer 64-gigabyte game cards for Switch until 2019.

Some developers have come up with workarounds - when the demon-infested shoot-em-up "Doom" came to the Switch earlier this year, the single-player campaign was on the cartridge, while players had to download the multiplayer component onto the console from the internet.

Nintendo did not respond to a request for comment.
