New York Giants Suspend CB Eli Apple For Season Finale

  • A brutal year for Eli Apple came to an end Wednesday as the Giants suspended their second-year corner

He's been publicly called a locker-room "cancer" by teammate Landon Collins, who later apologized for his radio comments about Apple needing to "grow up". The G-Men have paid Apple a boatload of cash to play the game at the highest level, and the return on investment has been questionable at best in 2017.

Second-year cornerback Eli Apple, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2016 draft, has made himself into a lightning rod for criticism.

While Apple played zero defensive snaps in Sunday's 23-0 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, essentially serving another benching, Collins started his 47th consecutive game, playing despite a sprained ankle before fracturing his right forearm in the second quarter. Besides, the other two guys, [Dominique Rodgers-Cromarie] and [Janoris Jenkins], I love those two guys.

But Collins tweeted out Wednesday morning that he's extended an olive branch to Apple. and has since apologized to the rest of his teammates. NY is in the process of interviewing general manager candidates following the firing of Jerry Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo on December 4.

New York Giants cornerback Eli Apple (28) and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo. They play hard. They love what they do. If the guarantees are voided, it becomes significantly easier for the Giants to jettison Apple after this season.

Apple said the next day that he had not spoken to Collins about anything.

"That first-round pick. he's a cancer", Collins said. After that meeting, Collins offered up a public apology. A new regime might want to rid the team of problems and start over.

Apple was inactive for four consecutive games, with the reasons ranging from personal reasons, injury (hip and back) and presumed disciplinary action stemming from behavior issues.
