North Korea on Sunday called the latest United Nations sanctions against the country "an act of war" that violates its sovereignty.
The U.N. Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Friday for its recent intercontinental ballistic missile test, seeking to limit its access to refined petroleum products and crude oil and its earnings from workers overseas.
"It sends the unambiguous message to Pyongyang that further defiance will invite further punishment and isolation", said U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley after the 15-0 vote.
The minister said the UN Security Council resolution to impose further sanctions on North Korea is "a declaration of war".
The UN Security Council unanimously approved the sanctions in response to North Korea's latest launch of a ballistic missile that Pyongyang says can reach anywhere on the US mainland.
North Korea on November 29 said it successfully tested a new ICBM that put the USA mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.
The resolution adopted by the Security Council includes sharply lower limits on North Korea's refined oil imports, the return home of all North Koreans working overseas within 24 months, and a crackdown on ships smuggling banned items including coal and oil to and from the country.
"In searching for the recognition of its status as a de facto nuclear-possessing state, (the North) would explore the possibility of negotiations with the U.S". Citing unnamed sources, the daily said there was a dramatic step-up in preparations for a military response to North Korea's missile tests.
