A British woman wept in court today after she was accused of smuggling drugs into Egypt.
The 33-year-old shopkeeper, Laura Plummer, was arrested on October 9 after police found close to 300 pills of Tramadol packed in her luggage at Egypt's Hurghada International Airport, according to the BBC.
The 33-year-old woman from Hull has maintained her innocence since her arrest, insisting that the Tramadol tablets were for her Egyptian partner who suffers from chronic back pain.
Her family were not in court this morning.
Plummer's trial started in the town of Safaga on Monday with what her lawyers described as a mistaken confession. She brought [the drugs] to help someone, to help a family.
She said their mother Roberta Sinclair, who travelled to the country for the hearing, and Mr Caboo were denied access to the hearing as their driver was running late.
Tramadol is a prescription medicine in Britain but it is banned in Egypt.
Her lawyer Mohamed Othman reportedly said a plane ticket showing she paid twice as much for her flights as the drugs were worth is proof that she was not planning to sell them. "I'm even more anxious now she's in actual prison with real criminals". Anything less than three years.
Her sister, Rachel Plummer, said the family's hopes now hinged on the outcome of the appeal.
She says she has no idea what she doing was illegal and was just "daft" after being given the Class C painkillers by a work friend.
"We're also devastated by the news that it's been able to carry on this far and the fact that she's been sentenced for three years, just for being kind, it's a disgrace". "Laura did not know that what she was carrying was a narcotic".
Mrs Sinclair said her daughter was being held in bad conditions in a communal cell with no beds, sharing with up to 25 other women.
Ms Plummer's defense team said that they will appeal the decision as soon as the judge submits his reasoning, which could take up to 60 days.
The Plummers' local member of parliament, Karl Turner, said Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt had raised her case with Egyptian authorities. "I think it's a damming indictment about good sense and fair play".
