The 128-9 vote was a victory for Palestinians, but fell short of the total they had predicted.

Israel deported two of the three Turks who were briefly detained during demonstrations at al-Aqsa mosque last week after U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Guatemala and Israel were joined by Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo in voting with the United States and opposing the measure.

Both Central American countries were two of the nine nations that voted "no" alongside the USA at the UN General Assembly to oppose the denouncement of Trump's decision.

Israel's Foreign Ministry has praised a decision by the president of Guatemala for the Central American country to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, saying the announcement represented "true friendship" between the two countries.

On Dec. 6, Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and move the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which is being strongly opposed by the global community.

Morales said in a brief post on his official Facebook page that he made the decision after speaking earlier in the day with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Reuters reported. Netanyahu said on Twitter, "It is just the beginning and it is important".

The Palestinians have declared the Guatemalan decision, "a shameful and illegal act that goes totally against the wishes of church leaders in Jerusalem".

Some of the U.S.'s closest allies condemned the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Israel seized the eastern part of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it in a move not recognized by the global community.

The resolution passed at the United Nations declared the U.S. action on Jerusalem "null and void".

Trump's announcement on December 6 sparked anger in the Palestinian territories and across the Muslim world.

Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its eternal and undivided capital while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state. Trump, however, has not set any deadline to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
