Haiti had sent 15,000 people.

According to The Times' report, Trump was upset about the number of people coming into the United States, and said that was "making a mockery of his pledge" to crack down on illegal immigration.

As tensions rose between Mr Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the room was cleared - but those kicked out could reportedly still hear Mr Trump berating senior advisers.

He then said once 40,000 Nigerian immigrants had seen the United States, they would never "go back to their huts in Africa", the officials told the paper.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders unsurprisingly denied The New York Times report, saying Trump never uttered those racist phrases, but she did not challenge that the meeting took place.

Tillerson was reportedly frustrated by Trump's anger and accusations, but the president was backed up by his nativist adviser Stephen Miller and his chief of staff John Kelly, who, later in the year, unapologetically lied about and defamed Frederica Wilson, a prominent African-African congresswoman from Florida.

The White House insisted to The Times that the president did not use the words "AIDS" or "huts" in the meeting.

The White House issued a swift denial of the comments on Saturday, calling the claims made by the Times "outrageous".

The White House did not dispute the thrust of the conversation in question, but but said Trump had not used such language.

An article in the Times on Saturday cited two Trump administration officials who claimed Trump made the remark about Haitian immigrants in a June meeting in the Oval Office, as well as other remarks aimed at immigrants from Nigeria.

"General Kelly, General McMaster, Secretary Tillerson, Secretary Nielsen, and all other ranking staff very the gathering deny these absurd cases and it's both tragic and telling the New York Times would print the lies of their unknown "sources" in any case", Sanders said.

Trump won the 2016 election while promoting his long-promised wall along the southern border of the United States, a ban on Muslim immigrants and putting America first.

"Two people who described the comments found them so noteworthy that they related them to others at the time, well predating [White House] pushback", Haberman said.
