  • Lady Gaga is signed to Universal Music Group which has signed a deal with Facebook

"We are excited to bring that to life on Facebook, Instagram, Oculus, and Messenger in partnership with Universal Music Group", said Tamar Hrivnak, Facebook's head of music business development and partnerships.

The music industry has long battled with illegal online music sharing, with artists losing out on royalties as their work is shared across social media.

The companies did not say when users would be able to share music in videos on platforms owned by Facebook.

Bloomberg reported earlier this year that Facebook was "offering major record labels and music publishers hundreds of millions of dollars so the users of its social network can legally include songs in videos they upload".

The two companies, in a joint statement, said they were developing more personalized functions in a bid to "develop the next generation of music products that best engage social consumers".

Attention, music lovers! Universal Music Group and Facebook are collaborating on a licensing deal that will enhance your social media experience.

"We look forward to Facebook becoming a significant contributor to a healthy ecosystem for music that will benefit artists, fans and all those who invest in bringing great music to the world", he added. Universal Music Group also has signed an agreement with YouTube.

YouTube is expected to launch a new paid music service next year after striking three deals with major labels this year, including UMG, which signed a second global, multi-year agreement with the site this week.

The move comes as Facebook's 2 billion plus users post and view more videos than ever before. On the other hand, now that Universal has its first licensing deal with Facebook, it opens up the door for other stuff down the road.

Facebook has increasingly gone head-to-head with YouTube on its signature turf of videos.
