  • Amtrak Derails Onto Highway South of Seattle

"There was an insane amount of fire trucks and ambulances heading towards us".

Founded in 1971 and headquartered in Union Station in Washington, D.C., Amtrak is a passenger railroad service that provides medium- and long-distance intercity service in the contiguous United States.

Patient transportation is being coordinated from the command center at St. Joseph Medical Center and the Pierce County Disaster Management Command Center.

"These are new, upgraded tracks - that's what is so surprising about this", said John Niles with the Coalition for Effective Transportation Alternatives, which joined local elected officials in opposing the project.

The train that derailed Monday during the morning rush hour left the track as it was about to cross over southbound lanes of I-5 near the south end of the bypass. The incident took place at 7:40 a.m. near DuPont, between Tacoma and Olympia.

Witness Greg Mukai was on his way to work when the traffic on I-5 came to a sudden stop and he could see the train dangling from an overpass. "We all tried to stop quickly to avoid running into each other to be honest".

Amtrak president and co-chief executive Richard Anderson said: "On behalf of everyone at Amtrak, we are deeply saddened by all that has happened today".

A section of the Amtrak train 501 derailed as it crossed a bridge over a major highway in Washington State.

It added that Amtrak service south of Seattle is temporarily suspended, but service from Seattle to points north and east is continuing to operate. "They weren't anxious about a train derailing".

Amtrak Cascades passenger trains going through Tacoma would usually take a route along the shores of Puget Sound. "We are committed to taking care of them and providing the highest level of assistance possible during their time of need", the statement said.

But the technology was only expected to be used next year when it is activated on the entire rail corridor, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. "You just knew when you saw it that something disgusting had happened", witness Danae Orlob said.
