  • Police and fire crews block off the streets near the New York Port Authority in New York City

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the explosion an "attempted terrorist attack" and said there were no additional known incidents. "Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals".

The suspect was in hospital in a serious condition with burn injuries on his hands and abdomen and lacerations after being detained.

What happened during the attack?

.

The blast, which took place in the station at the Port Authority bus terminal, sparked commuter panic and travel disruptions.

Everything around the Port Authority area was shut down - a surreal scene of still at what would ordinarily be a bustling rush hour.

Officials say he intentionally detonated a "low-tech" pipe bomb device that was affixed to his body using a combination of velcro and zip-ties.

What do we know about suspect Akayed Ullah?

In a statement to CNN, Allan.

The city's Taxi and Limousine Commission also confirmed Ullah was a licensed cab driver from March 2012 through March 2015.

A suspect was placed in custody after police responded to a man who appeared to have a pipe bomb strapped to his chest, according to a NYPD tweet. "We are not going to allow them to disrupt us".

The NYT reports: "He chose the location because of its Christmas-themed posters, recalling strikes in Europe against Christmas markets, he told investigators, and set off bomb in retaliation for USA airstrikes on ISIS targets in Syria and elsewhere, several law enforcement officials said". At this time, there are no current threats to the District of Columbia.

Details on how the suspect was apprehended were not immediately available, but the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, a union representing Port Authority police officers, said on Twitter that the department's officers took down the suspect at gunpoint.

"The A, C and E line are being evacuated at this time".

The device partially detonated below ground inside the subway passageway to the N, Q and R trains near 7th and 8th avenues on 42nd St and was captured on surveillance video.

He commended first responders and said there were "minor" injuries from the "essentially low tech" explosive device.

"The terrorists did not win".

Since the events of 9/11, New York City has remained relatively immune from the sort of terror attacks we've seen in European cities over the past five to ten years, though in the past year or so that has changed.

Brooklyn has a large Muslim-American population and boasts many mosques and madrassas throughout the largest borough in New York City. In April, 15 people were killed after a suicide bomber hit the metro in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Law enforcement officials told the Associated Press that Akayed Ullah, 27, was "inspired by the Islamic State" but apparently had no direct contact with the terrorist group.
