  • A Christmas Prince

'To the 53 people who've watched A Christmas Prince every day for the past 18 days: Who hurt you?' the tweet read, referring to Netflix's original festive movie which was released on the site just a few weeks ago.

'Hot Take: Netflix tweeting this is f*****g creepy, ' journalist Hugo Rifkind shared.

In business terms, this has always been viewed as a positive, that Netflix has been able to corral all this user data into a magical algorithm that helps them know what we want to watch before we do. The tweet's a joke, but not a very amusing one if you consider what could easily lie ahead for consumers online: less privacy and more powerful corporations.

But even though it's silly, "A Christmas Prince" has become something of a cult hit for Netflix, and has already created some superfans. But what seems to have struck a nerve is that Netflix is using information to share viewing habits publicly.

Christmas movie child stars: Where are they now? Shaming its subscribers, even in jest, for a feel-good film meant to cheer up its viewers didn't sit well with everyone.

53 people have watched A Christmas Prince every day for the past 18 days and now Netflix is throwing some shade at those people! How is this creepy when their library is public?,' wrote one user.

It makes you think about how much data Netflix is hoarding about each user.

On Monday, Netflix responded to TheWrap's request for comment on the tweet (and the drama that it ignited).

However, the message doesn't appear to violate the company's privacy policies since Netflix did not share specific information about its users, like their names, according to a lawyer who spoke with the Washington Post.

Netflix's Twitter account continued to have fun in the replies to its initial Tweet. But, clearly, some people really like it.
