  • Famous China rooftopper 'confirmed dead' after fall from skyscraper

The accident occurred November 8, it said, citing a post by Wu's girlfriend on Chinese social media site Weibo. In February, he began posting his daredevil stunts on Weibo, attracting more than a million followers. In his videos on Weibo, Yongning said he relied on martial arts training and careful planning when scaling skyscrapers.

Wu's family said the 26-year-old had taken part in a rooftopping challenge that promised 100,000 yuan (US$15,000) in prize money.

The video (not the one above) went viral in China and shows Wu carefully lowering himself off the edge of the building before doing a number of pull-ups.

However, reports have now surfaced that he died after falling from a 62-storey building in the city of Changsha.

A daredevil climber was attempting to scale a 62-story skyscraper in China when he plunged to his death, according to media reports.

Yongning's girlfriend alerted the authorities to his disappearance after he never returned home from going rooftopping on November 8.

"Rooftopping" is a new term coined for a newly emerging feat in which people climb extremely tall city buildings without any safety equipment and dangle from the top.

"He planned to propose to his girlfriend [the day after the challenge]", his step-uncle told the publication. He left the job to focus full time on rooftopping, and often appeared in social media advertisements. His girlfriend confirmed his death on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform similar to Twitter, a month later.

The Changsha Evening News said Mr Wu was seeking to make money for his poverty-striken family and pay medical costs for his mother, who suffers from a mental condition. He shared almost 300 videos of his death-defying acts.
